Car rental excess insurance

Buy car rental insurance through third parties to avoid exclusions and surprises!

Just read an article about a side mirror being excluded from car rental damage. So the customer took out the full car rental insurance to reduce the excess to $0, but when the car was returned with a scratched mirror, the client got a bill for €145 and was told the mirror are excluded from the insurance.

Oh how convenient of the rental company to pull that rabbit out of the hat.
That’s why I think it’s better to buy car rental insurance from a third party i.e. a provider independent from the rental firm. Because – many independent policies will guarantee to cover the whole excess rather than just what the rental company says is covered. Plus the independent insurer will argue the point with the car rental company and expose any shonky insurance practices or if they are just plain trying to rip customers off.
